Tempura Roll Sushi

Tempura Roll Sushi is a type of sushi that combines tempura and sushi. It is typically made with a sushi roll that has been filled with tempura-fried shrimp, carrot, and cucumber, and then topped with a sweet teriyaki sauce. The combination of the crisp tempura with the soft sushi rice creates a unique texture. Tempura Roll Sushi is a popular item on many sushi restaurant menus and can be served as a main course or as an appetizer.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 2 cups of cold cooked sushi rice
  • 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 4 sheets of nori
  • 4 ounces of cooked shrimp, sliced
  • 4 ounces of cooked crab, sliced
  • 4 ounces of cooked imitation crab, sliced
  • 1/4 cup of flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup of ice-cold water
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, for frying

Directions

  • Step 1
In a large bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and rice. Mix until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Step 2
Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo rolling mat. Place 1/4 of the rice mixture onto the nori, spreading it evenly into a rectangle. Place 1/4 of the shrimp, crab and imitation crab in the center of the rice.
  • Step 3
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, egg and water until smooth.
  • Step 4
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dip the sushi roll into the tempura batter, and then carefully place it into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown.
  • Step 5
Remove the sushi roll from the oil and place onto a plate lined with paper towels. Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing into 8 equal pieces.
