Dal Makhani Curry

Dal makhani is an Indian dish of whole black lentils, kidney beans and cream. Traditionally, it is made by slow cooking the lentils and beans in a tomato and butter based sauce, with a variety of spices, for several hours. The dish is creamy and rich, and is often served with rice, naan or roti. Dal makhani is a very popular dish in India and is enjoyed by people of all ages.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 2 cups of black lentils, rinsed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of freshly grated garlic
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly chopped cilantro, for garnish

Directions

  • Step 1
    Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add the lentils and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are tender.
  • Step 2
    Add the ginger, garlic, onion, tomato paste, cumin, garam masala, chili powder, coriander, turmeric, and cayenne pepper to the pot. Simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Stir in the cream, butter, and salt and simmer for 5 minutes more. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  • Step 4
    Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro and serve.
