Sweet and Sour Tofu

Sweet and sour tofu is a delicious and healthy Chinese dish, usually served as a side dish or main. It’s made with marinated tofu that’s stir-fried with a sweet and sour sauce. The tofu is usually lightly battered and fried until it’s golden and crunchy. The sauce is a combination of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar and chili peppers, giving it a sweet, sour and spicy flavor. It’s a great way to enjoy tofu and can be served with steamed white rice or noodles.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 (14-ounce) package extra firm tofu, drained and cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced

Directions

  • Step 1
    Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned.
  • Step 2
    In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar, garlic powder, ginger, and pepper until well-combined.
  • Step 3
    Add the bell peppers and onion to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Pour the sauce over the tofu and vegetables and stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened.
