Mongolian Beef

Mongolian Beef is a popular Chinese-American dish. It is made with sliced beef that is stir-fried with a variety of vegetables and a sweet and savory sauce. The dish often includes green onions, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce, and is typically served over steamed white or brown rice. It is a common dish found on many Chinese restaurant menus, as well as in home kitchens.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 1 ½ pounds flank steak, thinly sliced across the grain
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 3/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced

Directions

  • Step 1
    Toss the sliced flank steak in the cornstarch until the steak is evenly coated. Set aside.
  • Step 2
    Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over high heat. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add the steak to the skillet in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the skillet. Cook the steak for 1-2 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  • Step 3
    Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the skillet and reduce the heat to medium. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  • Step 4
    Add the soy sauce, brown sugar, and water and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.
  • Step 5
    Add the cooked steak and any accumulated juices to the skillet, stirring to coat the steak in the sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes, until heated through. Serve the Mongolian beef warm, garnished with the green onion.
