Japanese Gyoza

Japanese Gyoza is a type of dumpling that has become popular all over the world. It is made from a mixture of minced pork, vegetables, and spices, which is then wrapped in a thin layer of dough and pan-fried. Gyoza is often served as a side dish or as an appetizer, but it can also be served as the main course. It is a popular dish in Japan and is often served with soy sauce and/or chili oil.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 2 packs of dumpling wrappers
  • 1 pound ground pork or chicken
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup sake or white wine
  • 1/2 cup shredded cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions

  • Step 1
In a large bowl, mix together the ground pork or chicken, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, sake or white wine, cabbage, green onion, and salt.
  • Step 2
Lay out the dumpling wrappers on a clean surface. Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center of each wrapper.
  • Step 3
To fold the dumplings, moisten the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper in half, and press the edges together to seal.
  • Step 4
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of oil. Place the gyoza in the skillet, making sure they are not touching each other.
  • Step 5
Cook the gyoza for 3 to 4 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown. Add 1/4 cup of water and cover the skillet with a lid. Steam the gyoza for 5 minutes until the filling is cooked through.
