Japanese Chicken Katsu

Japanese Chicken Katsu is a popular Japanese dish consisting of a deep-fried chicken cutlet coated in Panko breadcrumbs. The cutlet is usually served with a sweet and tangy sauce known as tonkatsu sauce. The dish is often served with shredded cabbage and rice. It can also be served with a variety of other accompaniments such as rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and green tea. Chicken Katsu is a popular dish in both Japan and abroad, due to its simple and flavorful preparation.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Directions

  • Step 1
    Cut each chicken breast into two cutlets. Place the cutlets between two sheets of plastic wrap and use a meat mallet to pound them to an even thickness.
  • Step 2
    Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes. Place the flour in one dish. In the second dish, add the beaten eggs. In the third dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  • Step 3
    Dredge each chicken cutlet in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip the cutlet in the egg mixture, then dredge in the panko mixture, pressing to make sure the cutlet is evenly coated.
  • Step 4
    Heat a few inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken cutlets until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
