Gunkan Sushi

Gunkan Sushi, also known as “battleship sushi”, is a type of sushi consisting of a piece of nori (dried seaweed) wrapped around a portion of sushi rice, with a variety of ingredients such as fish roe, seafood, vegetables, or other ingredients placed on top. It is a popular type of sushi in Japan, and is often served as an appetizer or part of a sushi platter. The nori is wrapped around the sushi rice in a cylindrical shape, creating a “cup” that is filled with the ingredients. Gunkan sushi is also known for its “cute” appearance, as it resembles a small battleship when served.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 4 cups cooked sushi rice
  • 2 sheets nori seaweed
  • 1/4 cup pickled Japanese radish (daikon)
  • 4 ounces sashimi-grade tuna, cut into small cubes
  • 4 ounces salmon roe (ikura)
  • 2 ounces pickled squid (ika)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon black or white sesame seeds

Directions

  • Step 1
    Divide the cooked sushi rice into 4 equal portions and place each portion in a separate bowl.
  • Step 2
    Cut the nori seaweed into 4 equal pieces and place each piece on top of one of the bowls of sushi rice.
  • Step 3
    Divide the daikon among the 4 bowls and spread it evenly over the sushi rice.
  • Step 4
    Top each bowl with a portion of the tuna cubes, salmon roe, and pickled squid.
  • Step 5
    Top each bowl with a teaspoon of mayonnaise and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
  • Step 6
    Serve the gunkan sushi immediately.
