General Tso’s Chicken

General Tso’s Chicken is a popular Chinese-American dish consisting of crispy, deep-fried chicken cubes coated in a sweet and spicy sauce. It is believed to have been invented in the 1950s by Chinese-American chef Peng Chang-kuei in Taiwan, although there is some debate about the origin of the dish. The dish is now served in many Chinese restaurants in the United States and around the world. It is usually served with steamed white rice and a side of steamed vegetables.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Directions

  • Step 1
In a large bowl, toss the chicken cubes with the cornstarch until evenly coated.
  • Step 2
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  • Step 3
In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, garlic powder, ground ginger, and red pepper flakes.
  • Step 4
Add the sauce to the skillet and bring to a simmer. Return the chicken to the skillet and toss to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together.
