Malaysian Roti Canai

Malaysian Roti Canai is a type of flatbread that is popular in Malaysia and Singapore. It is made from a combination of flour, ghee, and water. The dough is kneaded, flattened and then cooked on a flat griddle. It is usually served with dhal, curry, or other condiments. Malaysian Roti Canai is a popular street food in Malaysia and Singapore, and is often eaten for breakfast or as a snack.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup warm water
  • vegetable oil, for cooking

Directions

  • Step 1
    In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and sugar.
  • Step 2
    Add the melted butter and stir until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Step 3
    Slowly add the warm water, a few tablespoons at a time, stirring with a fork until the dough starts to come together.
  • Step 4
    Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Step 5
    Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  • Step 6
    Cover the dough balls with a damp cloth and let them rest for 30 minutes.
  • Step 7
    Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add enough vegetable oil to lightly coat the pan.
  • Step 8
    One at a time, press each dough ball into a thin circle and carefully place it in the hot skillet.
  • Step 9
    Cook the roti for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crisp.
