Indian Naan

Indian naan is a traditional, flatbread that is popular in India and other parts of South Asia. It is often made with a combination of white flour, yogurt, and ghee (clarified butter). Naan is typically cooked in a tandoor, a clay oven heated with charcoal or wood. Naan is a delicious and versatile bread that can be eaten plain, topped with butter and garlic, or used to scoop up curries and other dishes. It is also a major staple in many Indian restaurants around the world.

Ingredients (2 Persons)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil or melted butter
  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or ghee

Directions

  • Step 1
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Add the olive oil or melted butter, yogurt, and 1/4 cup water and mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Step 2
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Step 3
Divide the dough into four equal pieces and shape them into balls. Place the balls on a lightly floured surface and cover with a damp cloth. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
  • Step 4
Heat a griddle or skillet over medium-high heat. Take each ball of dough and roll it out into a 9-10 inch circle. Brush the top with some melted butter or ghee and place it on the griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until the naan is golden brown and cooked through.
